They should be able to hold combat positions beacausealthough physical strength matters, the military still needs the intelligence that women can bring. Also, banning women from the combat hurts their military careers. Although women account for only ten percent of the enlisted personnel (Time, 8/21/95/ Pg. 31), theyare still a major part in the armed forces. Their performance recently has generated support from Congress andthe public for enhancing the role of females in the military. During the Persian Gulf War, women were sent to the Middle East to fly helicopters, service combat jets, refuel tankers, and load laser-guided bombs. Theirperformance has led the world to realize that women are extremely useful in combat. Defense secretary DickChaney said Women have made a major contribution tothis effort. We could not have won without them. Leaders in the field agreed. The Gulf War had the largestdeployment of women in the armed forces in history. Thesewomen encountered the same risks as the men they served with. Twenty one females lost their lives (Holm, Women inCombat: The New Reality, pg. 67-68). In the Persian Gulf, there were no exactpositions and all areas were equally vulnerable, so the idea of safe havens for women was not reallyapplicable. The official, established policies of the Army and Marine Corps exclude women from combat (Snyder, pg. 75-76). These policies prohibit women, on the basis of gender only, from over twelve percent of the skill positions and thirty-nine percent of the total positions offered by the Department of Defense. Such policies excluding women from combat need to be repealed by Congress. The Fourteenth Amendments Equal Protection Clause insuresevery citizen the equal protection of the laws. Although the clause is not applicable to Federal government, the Supreme Court said the Due Process Clause in the Fifth Amendment prohibits the federal government from making unreasonable classifications. Therefore the set laws and policies that exclude women from combat not only violate the Fifth Amendment, but also deny women their fundamental right to engage and excel in their chosen occupation. There have been many court cases involving women in combat over the years, althoughthere has never been a case directly challenging the constitutionality laws andregulations banning women from combat. Inthe case of Frontiero vs. Richardson, the courtrejected the idea that man is, or should be,womans protector or defender, which inactuality, put women not on a pedestal, but ina cage. Importance Of Being Earnest The Importance of Being Earnest, one serious theme that I noticed was the consistent act of deception throughout the entire play. However this lack of honesty was not lonesome for insightful comedy and a visible foreshadowing of upcoming events accompanied it. Meaning that the play was cleverly written with humor and provided us with an obvious chain of facts that would lead up to us unraveling the end of the play. This play critiques the need to lie or exaggerate the truth, in order to "fit in" the norm of English society during the 1890's. The unique characters in this play portray a nonchalant attitude along with subtle gestures in a tribute to not being (earnest); they were not being honest. Specifically, they all had unique characteristics that made it easier for them to not being honest. They also did little things that supported their insincere personalities. This obvious hypocrisy can be noted as early as the first act of the play. Such a case as when Algernon's servant, Lane, openly lies and says..."(Gravely.) There were no cucumbers in the market this morning, sir. I went down twice." (p.38) This is where the first of many lies throughout the play originates. Even though one could consider this lie an unselfish lie, since Lane lied for his master and not himself, it is still lie, whether it is a white lie or more. The exposure of this lie sets the mood of the play, a mood of deception. Carrying out the chain, Jack lies about his name being Ernest, a name that impresses Gwendolen. If only he originally knew the irony within the truth, he really is Ernest. He evades his association with Cecily "Well if you have to know, Cecily happens to be my aunt." (p.32) Why does the playwright, Wilde, choose to have Jack dispense such a composite scripture of deception? Meaning that Wilde depicted Jack's character as a person who from the beginning of the play, was lying. My guess for this attribute would be to show the ridiculousness of the need to have a prestigious family, unnecessary attributes to show for one-self and a name that show everything that you are not. Last December 20-21, 2013 we conducted a community immersion in Barangay 8a Upper Madapo hills Davao City. At first, I was very iffy about attending immersion. I didn’t see the entire point of attending something that didn’t seem to mean much to me, But as the days wore on during my immersion, I came to realize how blessed I was in life, how blessed I was to have grown up in such a safe and warm environment. With a loving family, and enough money to support my daily needs and education. During my immersion, I got to meet children who were only a few years younger than me, but who have endured much more in life than I ever have. They didn’t have the same resources that I have had to live a good lifestyle. The kids were very nice and friendly and cooperated with us when it came to the activities that we had prepared. We laid out activities for us and the children that were meant to be fun and social-oriented. At the end of those 2 days, I got to learn a lot about those children and the environment that they had been thrust into. At the end of it all, I am glad that I chose to attend the immersion. Though different from the other immersion sessions of other students I got to learn a lot about the community I was involved in. I can say that All our hard work and labor during the immersion had produced wonderful fruits and were just so happy that we made lot of children smile. Our experienced is Tiring yet FUN! This really was a worthwhile learning experience. A community, by definition, cannot be exclusive. In a community, everyone is tied by common bonds and chooses to look out for each other, not because it is convenient, but because it is right. A community is made of individuals, who are all equal in their humanity. Service has changed me by bringing me into contact with people who I would have not met otherwise and by amplifying my capacity to understand and empathize with others. I realized that Community Service is important for many reasons.I realized that It is A unique opportunity to use what was taught in class in a real-world setting, to Experience an increased cultural awareness and an appreciation for diversity. But I was in search of love in those days, and I went full of curiosity and the faint, unrecognized apprehension that here, at last, I should find that low door in the wall, which others, I knew had found before me, which opened on an enclosed and enchanted garden, which was somewhere, not over looked by any window, in the heart of that grey city. (p. 26) We first meet Sebastian, whom Charles refers to as, â€Å"the forerunner† for all his future relationships. Later we meet Celia, who is too busy with her friends and promoting Charles’ art to develop a fully formed romantic relationship with him. Finally, we get to know Julia, who has the potential to be a true soul-mate for Charles but the potential goes unfulfilled due to Charles’ agnosticism compared to Julia’s reawakened Catholicism with the advent of her father’s acceptance of the sacraments on his deathbed.Julia’s search for love is first made apparent to the reader when she initially meets Charles at the railway station. â€Å"She had made a preposterous little picture of the kind of man who would do [†¦] and she was in search of him when she met me at the railway station. I was not her man. She told me as much, without a word, when she took the cigarette from my lips † (p. 170-171). This shows that even at a young age Julia was in search of love.Her first experience with love was Rex Mottram, who had the outward style of a potential companion for her, but in the end lacked substance. From Rex she moved on to Charles, who seemed to be the perfect match, but their chemistry and compatibility could not overcome Charles’ lack of faith and Julia’s Catholic fears of sin and punishment. Finally there is Cordelia who has, throughout her life, struggled to conform to either the secular world or the world of religion: â€Å"there are [†¦ people who can't quite fit in either to the world or the monastic rule. I suppose I'm something of the sort myself. † (p. 288). During this struggle she is all the while searching for the love and acceptance of her God. As a young child she was very religious often acting with her own brand of piousness: â€Å"It's a new thing that a priest started last term. You send five bob to some nuns in Africa and they christen a baby and name her after you. I have got six black Cordelias.Isn't that lovely? † (p. 84-85) As an adult Cordelia flirts with entering a convent and eventually ends up serving as a nurse, both vocations that could be seen as serving God. These three are just a small sample of the many characters who contribute to the overarching theme of the search for love in Brideshead Revisited. In the end, the novel leaves the reader enthralled but still wondering when love will triumph and the main characters will find the inner peace they clearly long for.
